Working Out . . . At Our Age
So my mama always told me there were three things NEVER to discuss in an initial meeting with ANYONE, business or personal:
Sex, Politics, Religion.
I have a friend that covered all three in a single sentence to my son’s future in laws the first time I met them about former President Jimmy Carter, Jimmy’s church and his view on homosexuality. But I digress . . . . (but it is a REALLY funny story if you ever wanna hear it!)
I’d like to add a fourth. Working Out.
People are PASSIONATE about their work outs, their gyms, their programs, their methods. And I get it, I really do, but lately, I’m taking the attitude that something is better than nothing.
We’ve all over-indulged, we all need to get back on the wagon. We’ve all made those resolutions in January, and then again in June, and then again in September. . . .
I’m a big Crossfit fan, I mean after all that’s where I’ve met a lot of friends, went on that infamous beach trip almost four (!!!!!) years ago and have made lasting connections.
There have been Crossfit weddings, Crossfit babies
and sadly recently a Crossfit funeral, RIP Colonel Peevy. I’ve visited multiple boxes here in Atlanta, worked out with my pals at Crossfit Hilton Head, and did the “dirty thirty” at a Crossfit in my hometown in WV.
I’m a runner, I’ve run countless 5ks, trail runs, three half marathons and one triathlon.
So I’ve trained on my own, I’ve been that lonely runner out in the cold, in the heat, in the rain.
I still keep up my LAFitness membership. They have a pool I like to swim in and after my heart attack, I kept up my cardiac therapy of a little biking, a little treadmill, a little elliptical to ease me back into upping my heart rate.
Recently, at the invitation of a friend, I started going to a private training facility, SFX Fitness, that has classes on everything from boxing to spin to power to TRX. I’m scared every time I walk in, amazed every time I finish a class that I’m still breathing and elated every time I walk out that I conquered my fear and survived! Carrie’s started doing Orange Theory Fitness and LOVES it!! (not yet for me . . . )
My husband bought me a Jawbone UP band for Christmas and I’m obsessed with it. It makes me take longer walks with the dog,
it makes me park in the farthest parking spot at the store. It makes me super diligent about that second cocktail. I’m fascinated with tracking my sleeping patterns. (they’re weird).
So my point is, let’s all live and let live when it comes to moving our bodies. Something is better than nothing. And the most important thing is that it has to work for you. If you leave your first Crossfit workout and ask me to pull the car over so you can puke, then perhaps it’s not for you (you know who I’m talkin’ ‘bout, Sheri! – hahahah). If you HATE dancing, then perhaps a Zumba class is not for you (who hates dancing????) And if you have bad knees or joints, it’s probably best for you not to be a runner.
But there is something for everyone and at our age . . . . .
(wow, I should copyright that – haha)
